Introduction
Over a single year in Montreal, tournament results added up to three chess titles for a young player from Vancouver — National Master, Candidate Master, and FIDE Master — the latter two conferred by FIDE.
Away from the board, Lucas Yao is a classical pianist who has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York and the Basilica di San Pietro in Perugia. His chess has taken him from Singapore to the World Cadet Chess Championship in Egypt to tournament stops in Europe — and home again to British Columbia. He knows he is only at the beginning.
Two disciplines, one habit of mind: returning to the work, then doing it again with more care.
